I mean, BT1 is kinda open world in the sense that you can go to different areas, but some of those areas are just gonna whoop my ass. It gets tiresome clearing out the Wine Cellar over and over again to gain enough levels to make it to the next floor. It's 100% "go as far as I can while killing baddies, run back and rest, repeat until I earn enough XP to level-up, then repeat again and hope I can get a little further." Just total grinding without anything else going on. I don't mean to slam anyone who still enjoys BT1, but it's literally "Monsters have taken over the town, I'm the only good guys left (except shop/tavern owners, monsters don't bother them for whatever reason), I've gotta find the Big Bad and kill him.and that's it." Nobody has me doing anything to give me reason for my characters to earn XP and increase their skills. What's got me getting bored is the total lack of quests. It's not the graphics that bother me, or the game engine, or using my imagination. The general answer I got (and agree with) was "it was all we had, hardware/software limitations, they were still trying to figure it out." If it wasn't, it was definitely in r/CRPG. I posted recently about "how did we ever make it through these CRPGs back then, with death just around every corner." I think it was here. I'm finding that revisiting games from my teenage years is a little bit of a letdown. I decided to go Apple IIgs this time for the incredibly less annoying (and just pretty cool in general) music. Last time I played it was when it came out in the late 80s, except I had it on PC. As young boys, my friends and I all loaded up our wagon with guns and as much ammo as possible and most of us went on to die of dysentery./r/retrogames: Our discussion-only sister subreddit True to the spirit however, when people refer to playing the video game version it sounds exactly like our role play version. Instead, that was a game we played as a teacher driven role playing game when I was in 7th grade. I can look at all those Apple II games and pull out quite a few great ones.Īnd, as a side note, Oregon Trail is one of the games in the video I never played. There is the problem with making such lists. And I would have a strong desire to get F-15 Strike Eagle in there somewhere. I would also substitute in Epoch (which doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry) for Elite, Ultima III in for Ultima I (which I think was just a better, more popular game), and probably Seven Cities of Gold for one of the over-represented-on-the-list RPGs. Instead I would add Aztec and probably Autoduel. What defined Apple II games for me came much earlier in the life of the platform But Wasteland was the last Apple II game I ever bought, so that plays into it. Prince of Persia is a bit questionable for me as well, as I played it on the Mac much later on. If I were making the list I would probably strike Battle Chess and California Games from the list, as they came so late in the the cycle. A lot of the games on it were on multiple systems, so I think they more define computer games in the 1980s rather than the Apple II specifically. The games shown are, in chronological order:
